If you’ve used my recipes before (excited to have you as a fan!) then you’ll know I hate super-detailed, crazy-complicated recipes that keep me stuck in the kitchen for seemingly endless hours!
So, in keeping with my love of using just a few ingredients, these Tasty Tornadoes are a four-ingredient wonder! (Five, if you go with the gluten-free version)
By the way, my husband has celiac disease and so we eat gluten-free-everything. However, if you don’t fall under the group of “elites” then just follow the non-gluten-free option for this recipe below.

minutesTasty Tornadoes are mouthwatering little bites of cheesy, hammy, pastry, goodness. They’re easy to make and are perfect as appetizers!
Ingredients
1 roll Shortcrust Pastry
500g Picnic Ham
250g Cheese of your choice (I use cheddar)
- INGREDIENTS FOR GLUTEN-FREE OPTION
1 cup Gluten-Free Flour
175g Greek Yogurt
500g Picnic Ham (check ingredients, eg. spices, for gluten)
250g Cheese of your choice (I use cheddar)
Directions
- Roll out your thawed sheet of shortcrust pastry into a rectangle shape. Toll to about half a centimeter thick.
- Lay slices of ham on the pastry slightly overlapping each other making sure to cover the pastry almost to the edges.
- If you’re using the special sauce – here’s how, mix 3tbs mayonnaise, 1tsp hot sauce, 1tbs tomato sauce, and spread over ham.
- Evenly spread grated cheese.
- Starting with the long side of the rectangle carefully roll up the pastry.
- Gently slice into rounds just less than an inch thick.
- Lay on a greased baking tray and bake at 200 degrees Celcius until golden. (Oven temperatures vary so start checking on them after 15 mins. I use a gas oven and they take about 30 mins)
- *DIRECTIONS FOR GLUTEN-FREE OPTION
- Combine greek yogurt and gluten-free flour and mix to form a dough. Knead well and roll into a rectangle shape to use as your pastry.
- Follow on with directions above starting from step two.
(BE CAREFUL TO CHECK ALL INGREDIENTS FOR HIDDEN SOURCES OF GLUTEN)
Notes
- Save your pastry! Only begin laying out the fillings once you have everything ready and be quick about it otherwise your pastry will go soggy and it will be super hard to roll it up without it breaking.
Just A Side Note On The Gluten-Free Version Of Tasty Tornadoes
– I used a shop-bought gluten-free flour but if you can’t find something similar I would suggest trying almond or rice flour. If you do substitute the gluten-free flour for almond flour, rice flour, cassava flour, or one of the other non-wheat flours please share how it turns out in the comments. It’ll be great to know!
When To Serve Tasty Tornadoes
Served either hot or cold, these colorful swirls of yumminess taste great both ways. They’re great as a snack or appetizer and go well with most drinks. The combined flavors of ham, cheese, and pastry are delicious.
Because they’re so yum we sometimes just make up a batch even when there’s no occasion. (Oh dangerous! Easy way to add on a few kgs) They keep well and if you store them in the fridge they can last up to five days, but just try and keep them that long!
